You’ve probably made a sandwich before. Maybe a couple for lunch. Simple enough.
But imagine staring down a mountain of bread loaves… knowing you need to prep nearly 6,000 of them in a single morning.
That’s exactly what our team faced four weeks ago.
It was our final “Sandwich Day” of 2025. We knew it was going to be a big morning. But when we finally put down the butter knives and tallied up the total for the last two years?
The number didn’t even seem real.
107,000 Sandwiches
That is the milestone we just crossed.
To be exact, over the last two years, our team has made and delivered one hundred and seven thousand sandwiches to schools right here in Ipswich.
It’s hard to visualise a number that big. If you stacked them end-to-end, they would stretch for kilometers. But we don’t measure this in distance. We measure it in full stomachs.
And four weeks ago, we gathered for one final push to close out 2025.
The 5,880 Sandwich Morning
We wanted to finish the year strong.
The Ipswich City Rotary Club team rolled up their sleeves with a single goal: make sure no child goes hungry.
By the time the last crate was packed and the last glove was taken off, we had prepped 5,880 sandwiches. That is nearly six thousand lunches sorted.
It sounds like a logistical nightmare. And honestly? Without the right people, it would be. You can’t just buy a few loaves of bread and hope for the best.
You need a system. You need a team. You need what we have become: A well-oiled sandwich-producing machine.
Why We Do It
Before I tell you about the legends who made this happen, we need to talk about why we are in that room in the first place.
It isn’t just about the food. It’s about what the food does.
We partner with Eat Up Australia for a very specific reason. We know that a hungry child cannot learn. They can’t focus. They can’t thrive.
If a student is sitting in class worrying about their empty stomach, they aren’t listening to the teacher. They are falling behind.
These sandwiches are fuel.
They give kids the energy to participate, to play, and to get the education they deserve. When we hand over a crate of sandwiches, we aren’t just handing over bread and cheese. We are handing over opportunity.
The Production Line
You might be wondering how on earth you make 5,880 sandwiches in a few hours without losing your mind.
You need an army.
And luckily, Ipswich has one of the best volunteer armies in the country.
This program doesn’t run on magic. It runs on the people who show up, month after month, to spread, stack, wrap, and smile.
We have to shout out the student helpers first.
The students from Ipswich Girls’ & Junior Grammar School and St Edmund’s College are incredible.
It doesn’t matter if it’s raining. It doesn’t matter if they have other things to do.
They are always there. Seeing young people get up early to help other young people is the kind of thing that restores your faith in the future.
Then there is the corporate support.
The team at Commonwealth Bank didn’t just write a check and walk away. They jumped in. They helped keep the production line humming.
The Backbone of the Operation
Every successful project has those few people who are the glue holding it all together.
For us, there are four absolute champions who deserve a special mention.
Donna, Oggy, Tony, and Tiffany.
You are the backbone of this project. You turn up. You step up. You show up. Every. Single. Month.
It is easy to volunteer once. It is easy to do it when it’s convenient. But to commit to this level of service over the long haul requires a different kind of dedication.
And of course, we have to thank our dedicated Rotarians.
We have a motto: “Service Above Self”.
It’s a nice phrase to put on a banner. But it means nothing unless you live it. The people in this room live it. You know who you are, and we love you for it.
Fueling the Fuelers
Making 6,000 sandwiches builds up an appetite.
So we have to give a massive thank you to Reece and the team at GYG Ripley.
They helped us finish the year on a delicious note by supplying GYG brekky wraps for our crew.
It was the perfect way to fuel the people who fuel the kids.
A Final Thought for 2025
As we look back at the stacks of bread and the empty crates, it is easy to get lost in the numbers.
107,000 is a big statistic.
But never forget that every single one of those “units” went to a real child in a real school in our local area.
To everyone who has lent a hand, buttered a slice of bread, delivered a crate, or simply cheered us on: Thank you. Your support feeds more than just stomachs.
It feeds futures. We will see you in 2026. The production line awaits.
